Alternative Tourism: Redwood National and State Parks

Why we're starting this new section?

Hello everyone!

Before we start, I’d like to tell you about the reasons that led us to start this series of posts.

When we searched the web for “alternative tourism” we found a lot of tips and practices that move away from “All forms of travel opposed to mass tourism”, such as “Ecotourism & Geotourism”, “Adventure & Sports Tourism”, “Coastal & Maritime Tourism” etc;

But none of them recommended a place to visit!

This led us to ask ourselves another question, what is the point of knowing all these practices if we don’t know where to go?

It is difficult to arrive at a unique concept of ‘Alternative Tourism’, because each person will have their own judgment. Ours, considers that from a purely objective point of view, any place could be an Alternative to the usual depending on who the tourist is, which paradoxically takes into account a subjective point of view.

Therefore, here in this new series of TraveLand which we will call “Alternative Tourism”, we will show you places that you could visit and that fit what we understand as Alternative Tourism, which is nothing more than a place in the world, that maybe for you, is the alternative you were looking for at this moment. Each place has its essence, its magic, its details and its beauty, which makes it unique in itself.

Volume 1

Redwood National and State Parks

The Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP) encompass a collection of natural areas located along the northern California coast in the United States. This includes Redwood National Park, established in 1968, and three state parks: Del Norte Coast, Jedediah Smith, and Prairie Creek, with historical roots dating back to the 1920s. These combined areas cover 139,000 acres and are home to ancient temperate rainforests featuring coast redwoods. They safeguard 45% of the world’s remaining old-growth coast redwood forests, which are renowned for being among the tallest, oldest, and most massive tree species on Earth. Additionally, these parks preserve biodiversity, cultural heritage, and 37 miles of pristine coastline.

The world's tallest trees

The native range of coast redwoods spans from the northern California coast to the southern Oregon Coast. These trees are closely related to the giant sequoias found in central California and are more distantly related to the dawn redwoods native to the Sichuan-Hubei region of China. Coast redwoods hold the title for the tallest trees on Earth. As of September 2006, the tallest tree in the park, Hyperion, reached an impressive height of 115.5 meters, surpassing other notable trees in the park, such as Helios and Icarus, which measure 114.7 meters and 113.1 meters, respectively.
